Chapter Eleven

“This is not a good idea, Kennedy,” I said, getting out of the passenger seat of her silver convertible that she’d parked in the garage next to Old Sacramento.

“You’re right. It’s a fantastic idea,” she said, slipping her purse strap over her shoulder and shutting the driver’s side door. “You look great. So don’t be nervous meeting Anthony.”

I looked down at my dark blue sundress and matching flats. Kennedy had insisted that this was the perfect outfit for meeting Anthony, Daniel’s roommate. I wasn’t sure. All I knew was that I felt uncomfortable.

“I really don’t feel good about this,” I said, frowning.

This made Kennedy stop and turn around to face me. She put a hand on my shoulder. “Look, Erica. You’re sad things didn’t work out with Josh. I get that. But you told me that last weekend Mindy made her move and won. Right?”

I stared at her through incredulous eyes. “Stab me in the chest, why don’t you?”

“I’m just keeping it real.” She raised both hands and starting walking again. “Look, I wanted you and Josh to work out. Carrie wanted you guys to work out. Even Steve said the guy seemed ‘cool’ which is a huge compliment coming from him.”

I blew out a breath. “I know all of this. I just don’t know what I’m doing here.”

“You’re moving on, which is exactly what you need to do,” she said, glancing over at me as we walked along the cobblestone street leading to The Boat House, a nice restaurant located on the Sacramento River. “Kaitlin and Paul are getting married a week from Saturday. You need a wedding date. Daniel’s roommate is the perfect solution to all of your needs.”

“I still technically have a wedding date.” I tossed her an annoyed look over my shoulder. “Josh agreed to go with me if I helped him get Mindy back. He’s not going to wriggle out of his end of the deal.”

Kennedy clucked her tongue. “Yeah, you need to cut that deal loose. It’s pathetic.”

“Kick me while I’m down,” I said, glaring at her as I stopped to remove something from my shoe that was rubbing against my foot. A pebble. How did that get in there? I tossed it aside and kept walking. “Besides, Ross’s mom thinks I’m going to the wedding with Josh Taylor. So does my mother. I need to deliver on my pretend relationship.”

“Um, no, you don’t,” she said emphatically. “You’ll tell them you broke up and then you met this wonderful man named Anthony. You’ll love him. He’s a cartoonist.”

“A cartoonist,” I repeated, thinking that should make me happy that he wasn’t a corporate guy who was going to ignore me for his career. “That’s . . . interesting.”

“Exactly,” she said, lacing her arm through mine as we approached the front door. “He also runs marathons. I think Daniel said that he is currently training for a triathlon,” Kennedy said.

“He sounds great.” I sighed, because he did sound nice . . . he just wasn’t Josh.
